Best Winter Elopement Destinations—

Thailand vs. Hawaii: We Traded “Aloha” for “Sabai-Sabai”

(Learn Why!)

I lived on Kauaʻi for 10 years. I adore Hawaii—it’s where I launched my photography career and this wild little adventure-elopement company. Vows With Views was raised on aloha, and every couple who elopes with us will always feel that vibe. But for winter elopements, Thailand said “sabai-sabai,” handed us a juicier coconut and we never looked back.

TL;DR — Top 3 Reasons We Head to Thailand for Winters Instead of Hawaii

  • Winter Weather: Thailand’s dry season overlaps Hawaii’s rainiest months. Fewer rain dances, more golden hours over the Andaman Sea.

  • Freedom + Variety: Mountains, jungles, temples, monkeys—plus places we can actually fly our drone for you. Dinner… from a boat… in the middle of the ocean? Yes, chef.

  • Value: Your budget puts on a magic cape and does ten times more cool stuff.

10 Reasons We’ve traded Aloha for Sabai Sabai…

1) Weather: Dry Season Wins (Nov–Feb)

In Thailand’s winter, the skies behave. Crisp mornings up north, glowing sunsets on the Andaman—and your hair doesn’t stage a humidity mutiny. Hawaii’s winter brings bigger swells and heavy showers—romantic for surfers, chaotic for veils.
Translation: your ceremony has better odds of “sun-kissed” than “storm-chased.” And if getting on or in the water matters (boat rides, snorkeling, sea kayaking, paddle boarding), it’s prime season in Thailand while many of Hawaii’s best reef spots are too rough to access on most days.

2) Elephants & Monkeys (Ethically, Obviously)

Elephants? Heck yes—we partner with an incredible accredited rescue sanctuary where we feed, bathe, and fan-girl responsibly. These adorable achyderms are living their best spa lives in the jungles of Northern Thailand.
Monkeys? They show up on Krabi’s cliffs like tiny chaos agents in fur coats. They may have stolen your snacks, but look at that cute face—being mad about it is impossible. 😆

3) Less Crowded (a.k.a. No Sunset Wedding Conga Line)

Hawaii at golden hour: you, your officiant… and three other couples politely queuing for the same sea cliff. Ten photographers. Four ukuleles. One random beach yoga class. Parking is musical chairs with convertibles.
Thailand at golden hour: We swoop onto a longtail boat and glide over to a cove that isn’t on the “Top 10 Instagram Sunsets” list. No queue, no audience—maybe a curious crab and a coconut with excellent boundaries.

4) Your Budget Goes Beast Mode

Because Thailand is kinder to wallets, our elopement packages include more: the Hawaii permit fee for a “simple beach ceremony” can translate into private boat charter + island-hopping + beachfront bungalow + dinners+ fireshows + couples’ massages—and you’re still under budget.
Result: your elopement becomes a trip, not just a timeline.

5) Variety

Hawaii’s vibe: surf, beach nap, repeat (plus shave ice and a pretty waterfall hike). 10/10 relaxing.
Thailand’s vibe: a full adventure menu—where everyday can be a new genre:

  • On Water: longtail island-hopping, snorkeling in calm coves, sea kayaking through mangroves, sunset paddleboarding, cable-park wakeboarding (yes, it’s a thing).

  • On Rivers: Chill romantic bamboo rafting or splashy white-water rafting .

  • On Wheels: jungle ATV runs, sidecar scooters for cuteness, legendary motorbike loops (Samoeng day loop; Mae Hong Son for bragging rights).

  • In the Air: paramotor/ultralight sky rides at golden hour; seasonal hot-air balloons up north.

  • On Rock: world-class Railay/Tonsai sport climbing— cragging on the beach or summit a wild multi-pitch

  • In Hot Springs: steamy jungle pools under misty pines—perfect for a post-elope soak.

  • Temple & Culture: dawn alms, monk blessings, lantern nights, cooking classes, Muay Thai (watch or try), and markets that turn a “quick snack” run into a pilgrimage.

Hawaii is a perfect beach day. Thailand is a week of “Wait, we can do that too?”

6) Food & Culture: Your Taste Buds Are PSYCHED

Hawaii: delicious… and often $$$.
Thailand: street food that ruins you (in a good way) for all future noodles—and it’s wildly affordable.

We love poke (Thais vibe with it too!), plus pad thai, mango sticky rice, curries worth writing home about, and tropical fruits you didn’t know existed. Add monk alms at sunrise, lantern-lit markets at night, and that sweet Lanna charm. This is a wedding abroad that goes way beyond a pretty beach.

7) Climbing & Calmer Bays = Adventure You’ll Actually Do

Railay/Tonsai is a Disneyland of limestone—iconic and photogenic. Want to climb up the aisle instead of walking down it? Then these beaches are your playground.
On the water, the Andaman coast’s protected coves are perfect for weddings out at sea, snorkeling, and paddle dates. It’s adventure without the wrestling match.

8) More Freedom to Create

Hawaii reality check: That iconic waterfall or tucked-away lookout? Assemble your paperwork Voltron: commercial permits, insurance certs, site monitors, location-specific rules, and fees that feel like nature’s cover charge. Some of my favorite secret spots—especially waterfalls—aren’t permitted at all, or the process is so long that by the time we’re approved, your anniversary has already rolled around. It’s gorgeous, but the red tape can be a whole subplot you didn’t ask for.
Thailand energy: “Let’s make art—legally and efficiently.” Private boat charters? Green light. Boutique resorts and villas? Camera-friendly. Parks do have rules (we follow them), but the path to “yes” is usually faster, clearer, and far less wallet-sad. Want waterfall portraits, an empty beach at golden hour, or dinner in the middle of the ocean at sunset? Thailand says yes, then hands you a piña colada.

9) Stay Luxe for Less (Sleep Like Influencers, Pay Like Humans)

Beach bungalows, jungle villas with plunge pools, mountain cabins near waterfalls—way nicer stays for way fewer dollars. Your incredible beach wedding meets “Wait… this is our bungalow?” 🤯 vibes. Fancier digs, chiller bill.

10) Getting Around: From Gridlocked to “Wheee!”

Hawaii commute mood: you, in a pricey rental car, inching along behind fifteen convertibles that all made the same “scenic drive” Pinterest board. Parking is a side quest. Resort parking fees are the plot twist. Gas is… character-building.
Thailand commute mood: transit doubles as entertainment—and often costs less than your coffee back home.

  • Longtails – Convertibles with gills. Hop in, engine purrs, arrive wind-in-hair; zero stoplights.

  • Tuk-tuks – A three-wheeled carnival ride that knows shortcuts your GPS has never met. You giggle, you hold on, you arrive happy.

  • Songthaews – Open-air red trucks with bench seats. Think “Uber Pool,” but with breezes, bells, and a price tag that feels like a prank.

  • Motorbikes – Quick, nimble, perfect for coffee crawls and sunset overlooks.

  • Private drivers – Door-to-temple-to-dinner.  —You move like a local legend—with rates gentler than a tank of gas.

  • Car-free zones – Railay/Tonsai is boat-access only. The only traffic jam is a row of palm trees and the occasional smug cat.

In Hawaii, your budget and patience evaporate in a rental-car line. In Thailand, “getting there” is half the story—part boat parade, part joyride, zero parking meters.

Where to Elope in Thailand?

Thailand has a Variety of Vibes to choose from. We dig Krabi & Chiang Mai

Calmer Andaman seas, dreamy sunsets, and ultra-photogenic days around these areas. Winter is prime elopement season for Thailand’s south coast, with dreamy jungle weather up north around Chiang Mai.

The South:

Ideal for a cliff-view vow exchange, sea-cave portraits, and golden-hour island hops—the South offers several unique places to elope. If you’re looking for the kind of beach elopement packages couples dream about when they’re thinking of exotic ways to get married —this is definitely it.

Krabi, Railay & Tonsai

aka the ultimate beach wedding destination

Turquoise water, cathedral cliffs, long-tail boats, secret coves, island overlooks. It’s the classic canvas for an absolutely incredible beach wedding adventure.

The North:

Jungle peaks, waterfalls, vintage airstream villas, and temple-inspired settings. A great pick if you want cooler air and misty mountain light. This Thailand wedding base is full of diverse landscapes and rich culture.

Chiang Mai— the Highlands

the most enchanting jungly mountain wedding destination

First-look on a ridge— vows at a misty waterfall. Slow mornings, night markets, cozy mountain vibes.

Weddings With Elephants?

Our Ethical Notes (read this before you book)

“Sanctuary” isn’t a regulated term. Many “experiences” are shows in disguise. If seeing elephants matters, we partner only with reputable rescues that prioritize animal welfare (no riding, no performances). We’ll help you do it right—before or after your ceremony.

(Coming soon: our 7-day elopement trip that includes both destinations.)

Legal Marriage in Thailand for Foreigners… or Symbolic Ceremony (Sign at Home)?

Two routes; both lead to “married AF”:
  • Symbolic Ceremony (fan favorite): all play, zero admin. Celebrate in Thailand, sign at home later. Max freedom.

  • Legal Marriage in Thailand: one official date, a tiny dash of admin (embassy, translations, district office visits). We schedule the steps so it’s painless and—dare we say—kind of fun? Think “quick errand” energy, not “lost at the DMV” vibes.

Either way, it’s your story. We’re just the helpful NPCs with clipboards and cameras.

We blogged about it
